The Networking Crasher

Attending networking events are direct and efficient ways of making key connections. Establishing a meeting, seeing someone face to face and sharing interactions can deepen relationships. It can also set your networking course in the right direction. Of course, an individual should never leave networking up to chance. Believe it or not, there are times when an event arises and a person simply has to be flexible and accommodating. In this case, it is not out of the ordinary to attend a function when your name is not on the guest list. A last minute referral, introduction or tip can spark a door of opportunity and possibility.

Listed below are practical tips for maneuvering through an unexpected incident and making the most of your networking agenda.

Gate Keepers
If you are going to an event and did not RSVP, approach the registration table with confidence. Acknowledge that you did not sign up and offer to pay the amount for the event if applicable. Also, give to date contact information to be notified of similar events in the future. Use etiquette and courtesy to express yourself and show appreciation for the opportunity to participate in their activities. Give out your business card to display professionalism and credibility. It is also a good way to build your brand.

Crowd Pleaser
As you are networking with the people at the event, go out of your way to be jovial and friendly. If you are associated with the industry demographics or organization, look for key leaders or directors. Introduce yourself with a strong and meaningful 30 second speech. Ask engaging questions and collect business cards. Remember names, titles and employers/companies of the individuals which you meet. Focus on paying attention to details and following up with significant people who can grow your network. Move around the venue, do not stay in one place or speak with just one person. Ask to be introduced to relevant professionals which share similar interests and are like-minded.

The Exit Plan
After you are done networking, do not leave without making a few strategic moves to enhance your agenda. If possible, re-thank the person at the registration table for allowing you to attend the event. Re-connect with the people you spoke with at the event and request to follow up with them. Take a mental note of the activities from the event and evaluate the success of your networking. Make sure that you did achieve your goals and objectives or use those extra minutes to make some progress. Leave on a good and positive note.
